Thermal clothing is designed with thermoregulatory properties, meaning it retains heat when it's cold and cools you down when it's hot. Additionally, it breathes well and wicks away moisture, so even after heavy sweating, these clothes will quickly dry out.
Thermal garments are typically made from wool, with merino wool thermals being particularly popular. More luxurious and exceptionally comfortable thermal clothes are made from wool and silk blends.
Since thermal clothing is usually worn directly against the body (as the first layer of clothing in winter), they are often referred to as thermal underwear. However, many tops, especially those with delicate designs, embellishments, can be worn alone or paired with a knit or even under a tailored jacket.
Thanks to their thermoregulatory properties, thermal clothing is also great for sleeping in.
